Mata Atlantica

The Atlantic Rainforest offers visitors spectacular mountain scenery, beautiful mangrove lined bays. An exuberant forest full of hidden treasures like bridal veil waterfalls, a delicate orchid or the beautiful golden lion tamarin monkey … and some of the best Brazilian beaches.

Due to the large latitudinal span, strong altitudinal gradients and extreme climatic changes in the past, the biodiversity of this biome is extremely high. The Atlantic Rainforest contains an estimated 250 species of mammals, 340 amphibians and 1023 birds. Around half of the tree species and 80% of the primates are unique (endemic) to this hotspot.

BUZIOS - is one of the most famous beach destinations in Brazil. A former fishing village in Rio de Janeiro State enchants everyone with its charm, sophisticated shops in Rua das Pedras, and a series of excellent beaches for surfing, foot-volley, scuba diving, windsurfing and sailing. This peninsula, which seems more like an island, has a lively nightlife and is a haven for trendsetters and beautiful people tanned by the sun. The nearby golf course attracts players from all over the world.

ITATIAIA - Giant cliffs, crystal clear rivers and waterfalls are parts of the breathtaking scenery of Itatiaia National Park. Countless trails lead through the mountains of Atlantic Forest disturbed by river canyons. Here is the perfect setting for adventure sports, such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking, canyoning, canoeing and hang gliding.

PARATY – has been registered as a Historical Heritage of Brazil and even today preserves one of the most harmonious sets of architecture in the country. The whole collection of colonial style houses maintains the characteristics it had at the time the city was founded in the 16th century. Its stone-paved streets attract attention and lead the way to the old jail, the fort, museums, handicraft shops and churches. In addition to cultural attractions the region can also offer boat rides, cachaça (sugar cane liquor) tasting in the small distilleries of the sugar cane factories and good restaurants.

ILHABELA – the largest Brazilian marine island – has 326 square kilometers of privileged nature. Atlantic Forest dominates the surface in an impressive equilibrium with the ocean. A favorite haunt of pirates in days gone by, the waters of the Saco do Sombrio beach are calm and transparent. Castelhanos beach is great for surfing. The sea, limpid and clear, and the abundant marine life is an invitation for scuba diving & snorkeling. Jabaquara beach is cut across by small streams with waterfalls. At the southern part of the island, Bonete beach is home to a small village of fishermen that still maintain the traditions of the original settlers.

ANGRA DOS REIS - Here the beauty of nature begins with the color of the sea and the exuberant green of the Atlantic Forest. It is the perfect place for nautical sports, sub-aquatic fishing and boat cruises. Gipóia Island – one of Angra’s 365 islands – has peaceful bays and beautiful beaches like Piedade and Jurubaíba. At the latter, there is an additional attraction: a floating restaurants serving a varied menu of fish and seafood. In the Angra dos Reis region, there is trekking along the trails in the Atlantic Forest and a golf course, guaranteeing joy for lovers of those sports.

UBATUBA - with some of the most beautiful scenery in the Ubatuba region, Domingos Dias beach has calm clear waters. Huge rocks along the shore complete the scene. The Felix beach is almost a natural swimming pool, good for amateur scuba diving. To the left the sea changes and the waves there are suitable for surfing. Hidden away from the bustle of Ubatuba, the Cedro and Paruba beaches – with their thick vegetation and crystal-clear waters – have become the “in” place to be during the height of the season and long-weekend holidays.

ARRAIAL DO CABO - is one of Brazil’s excellent diving spots. The transparency of its water is unique and islands offer a tremendous variety of fish. Arraial do Cabo has good restaurants, a lively nightlife and the most beautiful sunset in the region. Dos Anjos beach is the most famous one because of its historical value: it was there that Américo Vespucci established the first settlement in 1503. At Pontal de Atalaia, beautiful little bays facing the Cabo Frio Island are excellent spots for fishing. The view from the top of the ‘Pontal’ (Promontory) is spectacular : beaches, islands, the Massambaba spit and the Araruama lake.

ILHA GRANDE - 193 square kilometers, 106 beaches, natural pools, waterfalls and preserved Forest, Ilha Grande (Big Island) enchants everyone with its surprising beauty. On the ocean side of the island there are the Aventureiro State Park and the Praia do Sul Ecological Reserve. The island is an ideal place for those who merely want peace and quiet, boat rides and lots of natural beauty; for scuba divers who will find a rich marine fauna, calm seas, clear water and the mystery of shipwrecks; for yachtsmen who can sail by the beaches facing the ocean or seek shelter and safety in the bays on the sheltered side of the island; or for adventurers who want to discover the trails and pathways formerly trodden by Indians and slaves, and the fascinating, untouched, hidden beauty of Ilha Grande.
